Registering for a Library Card
Individuals wishing to check out materials from the Watertown Public Library must have a library card in good standing. A free card will be issued to any adult with photo ID and proof of current address. Examples of proof of address include:
- Driver’s license
- Passport
- Utility bill
- Lease or mortgage agreement
- Check book
A Watertown Public Library card gives access to materials at any library in the Bridges Library System, which includes 24 libraries throughout Jefferson and Waukesha counties.
People under the age of 18 may get a library card if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with a photo ID and proof of current address.

Can I use my Watertown Public Library card at other libraries?
Yes, your card will work at any public library in Jefferson or Waukesha Counties.
How many items can I have checked out at a time?
125 items, however there are limits on certain types of items. For example, 2 Lucky Day items can be checked out at a time.
How long can I keep my items?
- Books: 3 weeks (except New Books: 2 weeks)
- Library of Things items: typically 2 weeks
- DVDs/Blu Rays: 1 week (TV series: 2 weeks)
- Adventure Passes: 5 days
- WiFi hotspots/Roku kits: 2 weeks
Where can I return my items:
Items can be dropped off inside the library at our automated book return, which is inside of our South entrance. We also have a drive-thru book drop that is open 24/7, also located on the South side of the building. You can also drop most items off at any library in the Bridges Library System and they will be sent back to Watertown.
Can I renew my items?
Most items can be renewed up to 3 times, as long as no one else is waiting for that item. To renew you can check your account on the Cafe app or website, or call the library. WiFi hotspots and Adventure Passes cannot be renewed.
How do I know if my hold is ready to be picked up?
You will get an automated notification from us. This will come in the form of a phone call, email or text, depending on what you selected when you signed up for your library card. Items will be held for 5 days after you are notified.
How long is my library card valid?
Your registration is good for 18 months. You will receive a notification a couple weeks before it needs to be renewed. To renew, you can stop by the library or give us a call. We will verify your contact information and renew your account.
Do you have late fines?
No, we do not charge late fines*. We do, however, charge lost fees once an item is out 30 days past the due date. Lost fees are waived if the item is eventually returned. *WiFi hotspots, Roku Kits and Adventure Passes are assessed a $5/day late fine.
How can I pay my account balance?
We take cash or check at the Circulation Desk. You may also pay online with a credit or debit card (a 5% service fee applies).
