Summer Reading

Welcome to Dig Into Reading, Watertown Public Library’s 2013 Summer Reading Program! We are happy that you will be joining us for a summer of creative reading adventures.

Registration begins on Monday, June 3, at 9:00 a.m.; the first progress tracking begins on Monday, June 10, at 9:00 a.m.

Parents of children ages 0-5 will keep track of titles (or chapters) read together: for every ten titles or chapters, we'll award a small incentive. At the third milestone, each child will choose a brand new book.

Students entering grades 1-5 will keep track of time spent reading. For every six hours, we'll award a small incentive. At the third milestone, each child will choose a brand new book to keep.

Children who continue to read can fill out Extra Reading Logs that will enter them in prize drawings at the end of July.

Along the way we'll offer special story times, crafts, parties, and special programs and performances that are free to the public and appropriate for all ages.

The program ends at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 27th — no exceptions! If you will be out of town, please mail your record sheets to Watertown Public Library, 100 S Water St., Watertown, WI 53094, postmarked on or before July 27th in order to receive credit for the books you have read.
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Studies indicate that children should hear at least 1,000 books from birth to age 5 in order to acquire the pre-reading skills necessary for school success.

To help parents in this endeavor, we will launch a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program in Watertown during National Library Week, April 14-20, 2013.

The goal of 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is to encourage early literacy development and young families reading together. Because repetition is a great thing for kids' developing brains, it's fine to count the same book each time it is read.

What does reading 1000 books look like?

One bedtime story every night for three years.
Ten books a week for two years.
Twenty books a week for one year (that's just 3 books a day).

Registration at the library is quick and easy. Any child 0-5 who has not yet attended kindergarten is eligible to enter. Each registered child will receive a tote bag and a folder with a reading log for the first 100 books.

Participants will earn incentives along the way, and those who complete the program will be listed on our 1,000 Books B4K Wall of Fame! Visit the Children's Room or call 920-262-4090 ext.23 for additional information.

One thousand thanks to the Friends of the Watertown Public Library, whose generous support makes this program possible.
